Odessa Young Scott Gary, 101, departed this life on Monday, January 14, 2019 in Magnolia, AR. She was born to Georgia H. and Floyd Young in Mt. Holly, AR on October 23, 1917.
At the age of 15, Odessa joined Beech Hill A.M.E. Church in Stephens, AR. Over the years, she served as an usher, missionary, class leader and kitchen chairperson.
Odessa loved reading her bible with Psalm 37, which she said the Lord gave her in 1950, being her favorite scripture. According to her obituary which she had written in her bible, Odessa stated, “My joy was saying encouraging words to people when they talked to me about their problems. They would tell me that they feel better when they talk to me. I would feel better, too!” She enjoyed doing word search puzzles and calling to check on friends and family. Before her health failed, she was well-known in the community for her pound cakes. Odessa was recognized as “Stephens Citizen of the Year” in 2005
In 1937, Odessa married James Scott and later married Eli Gary in 1957. Both preceded her in death. Others predeceasing her were her parents; two daughters Claudine S. Todd and Georgia Ann Scott; a son-in-law, Alvin H. Todd; a grandson, Oree Levell Todd and a grandson-in-law, Randall Christopher.
Mourning her passing are two sons, Oree (Airneda) Todd of Camden, AR and Edward (Angela) Gary of Dayton, OH; a daughter, Lettie M. Scott of Stephens; grandsons, Orlando (Glenda) Todd, Donnie (Lisa) Todd, William D. (Felesha) Todd, Alvin J. (Elizabeth) Todd, Phillip (Kim) Gary, Rashad Gary and Tylen Todd. Granddaughters: Annette Page, Anna M. Cobb, Claudette (Wm. Jerome) Robinson, Brenda (Carl) Cornett, Cheryl (Rev. Wilfred) Cross, Lynette Scott, Georgia R. (Robert) Curry, Corliss Christopher, Yashaunda Gary, Jammie (Julian) McClanahan, Lajoice Huffman, Kimberly Johnson, Chynia (Brandon) Porter; 45 great-grandchildren; 48 great great-grandchildren; 1 aunt, Laura Lewis; one daughter-in-love, Annie Bell Todd, a special friend/son, Thomas Todd; her extended family, the Ellis Children (Bruce, Jan, Nancy Carol, Paul and Marianne); and a host of other relatives and friends.
