Maddlyn Elizabeth Buffington Lyons was born October 9, 1919 in Columbia
County , Stephens, Arkansas to the late Professor Hiram Buffington and Emma
Cochran-Buffington. Maddlyn had 5 brothers and 6 sisters. Nine preceded her
in death: Verda, Fairbank, Carolyn, Clifton, Hiram, Morris, Katherine, Irene
and Merriell .
At an early age, she joined St. Matthew Baptist Church in McNeil, Arkansas
under the leadership of the late Rev. M. J. Tucker. She continued in the faith at
Greater St. Mark Missionary Baptist Church in Detroit, Michigan. She was a
member of Greater St. Mark for over four decades.
In 1941 she married Archie Samuel Lyons. To their union one child was born,
Dr. Samuel Dwight Lyons in June of 1955. She was a devoted mother. She was
so proud of her son. Frequently you would hear her speak about Dwight and his
accomplishments. She also open her heart to other family members including
two sisters, Carolyn and Katherine; two nieces, Jadawn Warren Heard and
Patricia Haynie; nephew, Barron Warren, Sr., who lived with her for a period of
time. She and her sister, Merriell, were inseparable and next door neighbors for
over fifty years.
Maddlyn was a devout Christian and active in her church. She served on a
number of committees and positions at the local, regional and national levels.
Among them included Church Secretary under Rev. Elmer Kirby, Sunday School
teacher, Deaconess Board and Mother’s Board . She also was affiliated with
BM&E State Congress.
Maddlyn leaves to cherish her memory: her son, Dr. Samuel Dwight Lyons
(Mary Ann).; granddaughter, Mary Ann; one brother Carl (Lillie Bell) Buffington
and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives,church family of Greater St. Mark
Missionary Baptist Church in Detroit, Michigan and friends.
The family would like to acknowledge and express deep appreciation to all
purpose companion/surrogate daughter, Loida Villanneva of Hawaii; caregivers,
Jay and Karen Daguio of Hawaii and Christine Warren-Holly of Southfield,
Michigan.
