Joyce Ann Kimbell was born in Magnolia, Arkansas on September 28th, 1942 to the parents of George Wesley Kimbell and Annie Elzora Kimbell, who proceeded her in death. Joyce Kimbell completed her primary education in the Walker School system in Magnolia, Arkansas. She graduated from Jonesboro High School in Jonesboro, Arkansas. She received her B.A. in Business Administration from Philander Smith College, Little rock, Arkansas, and her master’s Education in Business Education from the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana, Illinois.
On June 4th, 1966, Joyce Ann Kimbell united in holy matrimony to Lorenzo Marvel (who preceded her in death), at Wheeler Chapel C.M.E. Church in Robbins, Il. From this union, one son was born, Wesley Liddell Marvel (LaKeisha).
Joyce was a committed educator who retired from Community High School District 218, Oak Lawn, Illinois, after thirty-eight years of service. She was also an active member of her community. She was elected to the Public Library Board, and the Public Park District Board, and appointed a member of the Village Activities Guild, Inc., an organization that focused on getting teens involved in community service. Joyce was an active member of Wheeler Chapel C.M.E. Church, serving locally, and on the District and annual Conference levels. She was also a member of Theta Omega Chapter of Alpha KPP Alpha Sorority, Inc., Chicago, before becoming a charter member of Theta Rho Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Markham, Illinois.
After retiring to Magnolia, Arkansas, Joyce continued her community involvement as a member of Trinity C.M.E. Church, Phi Zeta Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., West Cemetery Board, and the Columbia County Chapter of the NAACP.
Joyce was a life member of Illinois Education Association/National Education Association Retired, Philander Smith College Alumni Association, and a charter member of the National Museum of African American History and Culture. In 2001, she received the Dedicated Service Award from the Village Activities Guild, Inc., Robbins, Illinois, and the Educator of the year Award from Kappa Chi Chapter of Omega Psi Fraternity, Magnolia, Arkansas. In 2013 Joyce was awarded the community Service Award from the Columbia County Chapter of the NAACP.
She leaves to cherish, her son, Wesley (LaKeisha) Marvel, her grandchildren, Jaylen, Joseph, and Janiya; special sister/cousin-Peggy Russ, Godbrother, Dr. Ansel (Tange) Johnson, Aunt, Jeotha Johnson, Godson, Arrerk Stewart and host of special cousins, church family, sorority sisters and friends.
