    Obituary

Gertie Cross Hughes was born in Columbia County on September 18, 1921 to the late George and Maggie Johnson Cross. She departed this life on November 14, 2012 in the Ouachita Nursing and Rehab Center in Camden, Arkansas.

Gertie accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at the Beech Hill AME Church. She was a faithful church member until her health failed her.

She was united in Holy Matrimony with O.V. Hughes in 1948. After marriage she 
united the Good Hope Baptist Church. She and O.V. worked diligently in the choir and 
singing unions. Gertie loved her church, her family, her hats and keeping her skin and 
hair in great condition.

Gertie was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her stepson,: Charles Hughes, her brother: Charles Alexander Cross and five sisters: Birdie Kelps, Ruth Todd, 
Aliee (Judy) Wyrick, Lorene McCoy and Irene Torrence.


She leaves the following survivors to cherish her memory: one sister: Corine Cross Todd of Stephens, AR, two stepdaughters: Maxine (Roy) Gathwright of Clear Lake, CA and Emma Hodges of Hamilton, OH; one stepdaughter-in-law: Mavis Hodges of Missouri; one sister-in-law: Lois Hughes of Arkadelphia, AR: one special cousin: Eddie James (Shelia) Adair of Camden, AR and a host of step grands, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
